DD National, formerly known as DD1, is India's first and oldest television channel. It is a government channel operated by India's public service broadcaster Doordarshan. DD National has a rich history of over six decades, and has played a vital role in shaping India's television landscape.
Early Years (1959-1970) -
DD National was launched on September 15, 1959 as an experimental service. It was initially broadcast from Delhi and was known as Delhi Doordarshan. The channel started with a modest programming schedule of two hours, consisting of newsreels, educational programmes and entertainment content.
Expansion and Growth (1970-1980) -
In the 1970s, DD National expanded its reach to other parts of the country. The channel began broadcasting in Mumbai (then Bombay) in 1972, followed by Chennai (then Madras) and Kolkata (then Calcutta) in 1975. DD National's programming schedule was also increased to four hours per day. Colour television and satellite broadcasting (1980–1990) DD National introduced colour television during the 1982 Asian Games held in Delhi. The channel also began satellite broadcasting in 1983, enabling it to reach a wider audience across the country.
Competition with Private TV channels -
Private channels and competition (1990–2000) The 1990s saw the entry of private television channels in India, which posed a major challenge to DD National. The channel responded by introducing new programming and improving the quality of its production. Digitization and high-definition broadcasting (2000-present) In the 2000s, DD National began its digitization process, which included upgrading its infrastructure and adopting new technologies. The channel also began high-definition broadcasting via DD Freedish for free in 2014.
Current Status -
Today, DD National is one of the most watched television channels in India, reaching over 90% of the country's population. The channel offers a wide variety of programming, including news, current affairs, entertainment and educational content.
